Keith Lamont Scott deserves justice

Keith Lamont Scott deserves justice

This week a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, the 164th Black man killed by U.S. police this year. Mr. Scott was not a suspect for any crime. Officers were trying to execute a warrant for a different person.

Keith Lamont Scott deserves justice, and the public and Mr. Scott’s family deserve answers. That begins with transparency.

Tell Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and Police Chief Kerr Putney to release any and all police camera footage of the events surrounding Mr. Scott’s killing.

Officials have confirmed that there is body and dash camera footage of the events surrounding the shooting, but they have so far refused to release it. At a press conference today, Chief Putney repeated that they would not release the footage, in part because it does not show evidence that Mr. Scott was pointing a gun at officers, as police claim.

In light of discrepancies between what police and community members are saying about the events surrounding Mr. Scott’s killing, it is vital for that video footage to be made public. There is nothing legally preventing police from releasing the footage in the public interest.

Tell Charlotte officials to be transparent and release the footage by signing our petition.
